The Shakespeare Company announces its new artistic producer and thanks Haysam Kadri for 11 brilliant seasons of award-winning classical theatre.

Calgary, AB (February 1, 2024) – The Shakespeare Company Board of Directors is pleased to welcome Richard Beaune as the company’s new Artistic Producer.

Richard brings a physically dynamic approach to classically inspired theatre along with his nearly 40 years of professional experience as an actor and director with productions at the Stratford Festival, the Shaw Festival, Citadel Theatre and the National Arts Centre. Most recently Beaune served as Artistic Director for Prime Stock Theatre in Red Deer.

“I’m thrilled to be able to add to the exciting legacy of The Shakespeare Company in revisiting these epic tales through a contemporary lens that celebrates the rich diversity of this great city,” said Richard Beaune.

Richard takes the reins from former Artistic Producer Haysam Kadri whose bold leadership over more than a decade positioned the company as one of the premier classical theatre companies in Western Canada.

“We are delighted to embark on a new chapter for The Shakespeare Company under Richard’s capable leadership,” said Robb Fergusson, president of The Shakespeare Company.

“On behalf of the board, I would also like to thank Haysam for lending his incredible talent to this organization over the past 11 years. He raised the profile of The Shakespeare Company with inventive, award-winning productions that attracted star creatives like Stratford favourite Seana McKenna, acclaimed U.S. director Carey Perloff and Pakistani-Canadian actor Ahad Raza Mir.

“Haysam led this company with aplomb and enriched Calgary audiences in the process. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors,” Fergusson said.

The board would also like to thank Meg Farhall for her interim stewardship of the company these last few months.

Richard officially takes the helm on February 1st. His introductory season as Artistic Producer will be next year’s 2024/25 season.
